Chris Martin: Coldplay’s old say today can lay if you may

Posted October 8th, 2007

Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah, they were all yellow.

I came along,
I wrote a song for you,
And all the things you do,
And it was called “Yellow.”

So then I took my turn,
Oh what a thing to have done,
And it was all “Yellow.”

stupid quotes from Chris Martin at Superstar Morons

“Yellow” by Guy Berryman

Why It’s Moronic

It plays like a love song, but I’d probably be embarrassed to learn my beau is so stupid if he sang this to me.

This song is one of Coldplay’s popular (but old) pieces and representative of the band’s work: The lyrics are crappily juvenile, and everything is very “this line rhymes with that line, this rhyme lines with that line, repeat.” Most of their songs are cryptic in the way a 19-year-old girl’s poetry journal is—not very meaningful... just full of words that seem insightful if you don’t really listen.

Then there’s the line ‘And it was called “Yellow.”’ The song is referenced within the song? Huh? I’d like to see a doctoral candidate try that in his thesis. Yeah, reference your own paper as a source, and see whether you’re awarded a diploma. Couldn’t that line have been worked on for, I don’t know, like three more minutes to find something else that rhymes? Like “And it made me bellow.” Or “It made me feel mellow.” Or “And now I say hello.” Yes, those are stupid examples, but that’s just about ten seconds of work. I’m sure a professional lyricist could’ve figured out something more successful.

A final note: While the lyrics are credited to bassist Guy Berryman, Chris Martin is the celeb frontman of Coldplay who actually sings the song and is most well-known, so he's pictured.

  1. Yellow is a great song and Chris MArtin wrote it.

  2. Its funny you say that…caus the song sold millions…and so did the bands albums…so lay off. They’re one of the best bands around…

  3. Ha ha ha! Someone is defending these lyrics?

  4. Oh my god! How can you say that about this great song! you´re just stupid man!

  5. The song is poetic. Poetry doesn’t have to have complicated diction to be poetic. Plus, the topic is moronic quotes, not lyrics. Maybe you’re the moron.

  6. Wow. You’re incredibly dumb. It’s supposed to be simplistic. Get over yourself, really.

  7. YOU are the moron, not Chris Martin. You Have no taste in good music. Coldplay IS the best band, the
charts prove it. And for someone who lives off of gosiping about celebrities, you shouldn’t talk.

  8. dude, chill. if you are so critical about it, then why dont you write a song like chris martin and sell millions of copies?

  9. Yess, you’re such an ass, is that all you have to do, trash talk these lyrics??
This song is really amazing, with these lyrics it’s perfect

  10. How can you critisize a band like coldplay. So what if the lyrics aren’t what you like and maybe the writer, chris martin is trying to make a point.Coldplay are my favourite band and they don’t need and they don’t deserve to be critisized.
Lay off them and write your own song and if you think you can write a better song with lyrics that have ‘more’ definition and meaning. Jerk.

  11. Ummm…this song is amazing. The fact that someone is bashing Coldplay over every other crappy teeny-boppy band out there is astonishing. This band actually has talent, and writes their own songs. I am appalled how anyone could possibly think that these lyrics (along with any other coldplay lyrics) aren’t meaningful…maybe not to you, you heartless bastard, but they were obviously meaningful to the band! And about the ryhme scheme…maybe you are unaware that poetry/songs do not have to follow specific ryhme schemes. I am an english major, and an important part of poetry is that it does not necessarily need a ryhme scheme…oh an P.S, that charicature doesn’t look anything like chris martin. have a nice day! :)

  12. Don’t you dare diss that song, it’s awesome, if he would serenade it to me, i’d be blown away .. so stfu

  13. you are an absolute fool not only is this one of the greatest songs written by one of the greatest bands
ever! songs are emant to rhyme! could it possibly be that you insult him for your own lack of talent?
I say, yes and back the f^@# up quickly

  14. fuck off

  15. haha you are very funny LAY OFF OK? JEALOUS MUCH?

  16. no such thing as a proffesional lyricist, dude. and they are not crappy lyrics. they are fine. i suppose you think brittney spears is deep, you shallow delusional…dude.

  17. this critic is an idiot…

  18. I’m not surprised that most of the comments from the ardent Coldplay fans are rife with errors and simple words. :D

  19. Wow. Molly is “astonished” that anyone could bash Coldplay. Really? Astonished? Which is more astonishing: poking fun at Coldplay lyrics, or watching the miracle of birth? Just wondering.

I must say: Although it’s not astonishing, “Viva La Vida” is catchy. Stupid, but catchy.
